This British unit, which was attached to the 43rd^“ Wessex” Infantry Division, arrived on September 23, 1944 as part of Operation Market Garden at the brick factory “De Korevaar” This unit defended this place along the Driel Rijndijk for more than a week, until they were relieved on October 4, 1944 by the Americans of the 101st Airborne Division.

42 men of the Hampshire Regiment lost their lives in the fighting around the brickworks and their names are now engraved on the monument along the Driel Rijndijk, at number 43.
