Driel: 101st Airborne Division Commemoration

U.S. 101 Airborne Division
This American unit arrived with parachutes and gliders as part of Operation Market Garden around Eindhoven on 17 September 1944. After several battles in this area, the division was moved to the Betuwe by truck on 4 October 1944. There they fought until the end of November 1944 to defend the Betuwe. Nearly 300 men of this unit were killed.
These soldiers are commemorated at the monument on the Driel Rijndijk near house number 1 and the A50 motorway.
